CELSTEM - Stem Cells: New Tools in Clinical Applications

In veterinary medicine, as well as in human medicine, regenerative therapy using stem cells is getting increasing importance.

In veterinary medicine, as well as in human medicine, regenerative therapy using stem cells is getting increasing importance. Stem cells are currently considered the most promising candidates for applications in tissue engineering and regenerative / restorative medicine, alone or in combination with biomaterials, such as scaffolds. This research project aims to develop in vitro isolation and amplification protocols for stem cells isolated from various sites originating from different animal species, in order to evaluate their regenerative capacity in vivo. The animals deemed most suitable for the research activities described above will be selected. Screening procedures will be performed through clinical evaluation and imaging of various lesions, which can be treated with stem cells alone or in combination with scaffolds. Thereafter, clinical evaluation through diagnostic imaging, histological sampling and biochemical analyses will be carried out at various time intervals, for the follow-up evaluation. The obtained data will be related with the classic intervention procedures. On the basis of the results, a therapeutic protocol for successful treatment of lesions affecting different organs will be defined.
