Research Activities

The research activity is mainly focused on:

  • Biomaterials for Healthcare: design, advanced methods of characterization. Biomaterials for regenerative medicine based on bioactive glasses and substituted calcium phosphates. Biomedical cements. Biomimetic materials. Materials for cranio-facial defects, implants for skull.
  • Coatings for biomedical implants for orthopaedics and dentistry. Coatings on titanium implants and on biodegradable implants. Coatings materials are based on bioactive glasses and substituted calcium phosphates.
  • New diagnostic techniques for tumours, based on biochemical profile. Application of Raman spectroscopy for cancer diagnostics. Investigated human tissues: thyroid, parathyroid, lymph nodes. By Raman spectroscopy we were able to discriminate low grade primary tumours from benign tissues, high grade primary tumours from tumour metastasis (secondary tumours), and tumour grades.
  • Superhard materials and coatings for technological applications (cutting and forming tools): borates and carbides of transition metals.
