Vacuum Technology

Design and fabrication of standard and advanced Vacuum Technology components and systems is extremely important for a research Institute active in introducing novel physical mechanisms and analysis technologies for materials. Although some tools are common with precision mechanics, Vacuum Technology differs in specific tools such as TIG welding, brazing, leak testing and residual gas analysis.
All the mechanical workshops have tools for the Vacuum Technology, however the GLAM laboratory is extremely specialized in this topic, since it provides technical support to the atomic and molecular physics group of the Elettra laboratory (Trieste, Italy) and to ISM-CNR research activities, within the MIUR International Project EUROFEL. The laboratory performs 3D design of advanced instrumentation for vacuum and ultra-high vacuum experiments. It carries out precision mechanical works at the Elettra ST workshops. It assembles and tests the new equipment as well as it takes care of the maintenance of the equipment in use at the beamlines.

Hardware

The Hardware facilities are divided into three branches: design, workshops for precision mechanics, and workshops for electronics. The available design tools are based on CAD workstations working with commercial 2D and 3D software. The precision mechanics tools range from standard turning and milling, drill press, cutting machine and sawing units, to the wire welding and electro-erosion. The workshop for electronics, especially devoted to the development and repair of discrete component circuits, is equipped with variable power supplies, welding units, and precision multimeters.
Mechanical workshops, which anyway contribute to support the technical activities of all the other TEMPISM lines, are located in the different geographic Sections of ISM. In TorVergata Research Area of Rome 2, the workshop ARTOV2 (managed by G. De Santis) provide ordinary and extraordinary maintenance to the mechanical systems. Similar tools are provided by the workshop of the Montelibretti Section (managed by F. Pallotta) and by GLAM of Trieste (managed by F. Zuccaro), which provides direct technical support to the Elettra Synchrotron. Know-how and tools for electronics are located in TorVergata (managed by M. Rinaldi) and in Montelibretti Section (managed by A. Morabito).

The Precision Mechanical Workshop ARTOV2 offers a mechanical technical service that periodically and continuously provides technical support to research groups as well as to individual researchers and technicians of the laboratories belonging to ISM. The activities carried out concern in particular:
  • Realization of non-commercial mechanical parts, on the basis of technical drawings provided by the applicant.
  • Mechanical details, flanges with o-ring seats to be installed in experimental equipment of existing laboratories.

  • Experimental prototypes with precision mechanisms.

  • Equipment and components for vacuum chambers.

  • Assembly with bench adjustment work and with hand finishing.

  • Tungsten welding with TIG inert gas for stainless steel and anticorodal aluminum.

Examples

Mechanical processing and assembly of the new 2D delay line (2DDL) detector of the VG 220i electron spectrometer of the GasPhase beamline. The 2DDL detector has been realized in collaboration with the Elettra ST Detectors and Instrumentation group in the framework of the CERIC project DynaChiro (Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Chiral Systems).
