PRISM prize 2023 - Winners announced

For the Senior PRISM category, the Prize has been awarded to Federico Capasso - Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering, John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University - USA
For the Junior PRISM category, the Prize has been awarded to Nicola Gasparini - Lecturer in Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London - UK

The award is presented annually by an international jury to two scientists having achieved outstanding breakthroughs in the field of Science of Materials in the last 5 years. The award ceremony will take place at the Marconi Hall of the National Research Council, P.le Aldo Moro 7 in Rome, and will be broadcast live on the social media channels of CNR-ISM on October 24th at 3:00 PM (CEST).

Prof. Federico Capasso
Federico Capasso has been more than twenty years at Bell Labs in Murray Hill as a researcher, manager, and then Vice President of Physical Research. He then has joined Harvard University (USA) in 2003 as the Robert Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering. His main achievements are in the fields of Band Structure Engineering and Quantum Cascade Lasers (which were invented by him and his group in 1994), Metasurfaces and Flat optics, Plasmonics, and Casimir forces. For his pioneering research in these fields and for his contributions to the invention of and improvements on the quantum cascade laser he has been named a Clarivate Citation Laureate for 2023, an accolade which is widely considered to be an indicator of possible future winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Dr. Nicola Gasparini
After a two-year postdoctoral fellow at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia), Nicola Gasparini joined Imperial College of London (UK) in 2019 first as a Principal Investigator and then as Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Chemistry. His interests lie in the fundamental and application-oriented research in lab-scale and large-area printed electronics, in particular organic and perovskite photovoltaics and photodetectors, and bioelectronics. His efforts have focused on the design of highly efficient photodiodes and on their electro-optical and structural characterization.
