Ion-molecule reactivity - mass spectrometry

The study of the ion-molecule reactivity in gas phase allows to evaluate the kinetics and the energetics of reactions fundamental for astrophysical and atmospheric applications. In these experiments, the neutral reagents are introduced in the octupole that acts as a two-dimensional trap, which ensures an extended reaction region and an efficient collection of the ionic products of the ion–molecule reactions. The ions are produced thanks to the ionization induced by the synchrotron radiation that can be tuned and scanned with aim to generate controlled excited species.
