BioMaH - Materials and new technologies for health

The project is related to biomaterials for dental and orthopedic applications, in particular, the design and production of innovative functional materials to be used as substitutes for bone and teeth, applying nanotechnology and genetic engineering.

 

The project is related to biomaterials for dental and orthopedic applications, in particular, the design and production of innovative functional materials to be used as substitutes for bone and teeth, applying nanotechnology and genetic engineering. The aim is to propose innovative strategies aimed at tissue regeneration. Among the different types of materials studied are bioceramics of innovative design able to bind to hard and soft tissues, stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of cells and angiogenesis. Furthermore, the research group deals with the latest generation injectable cements for vertebroplasty and materials for skull prostheses. The project aims of clinical transfer of a new diagnostic method for tumors based on Raman spectroscopy with the use of fibers, in order to discriminate healthy and pathological tissues of the thyroid, parathyroid and lymph nodes and some brain pathologies, such as glioblastoma, epilepsy and autism, to detect specific biochemical characteristics and identify disease-specific biomarkers. Recent studies have shown that Raman spectroscopy can be used for the biochemical study for cancer diagnostics. We used Raman Imaging microscopy to develop a spectroscopic approach as a new diagnostic tool, in support of histopathological analysis. As output, biochemical profiles of thyroid (such as carcinomas, follicular adenomas, nodules) and brain diseases, such as glioblastoma, epilepsy and autism, are expected to be obtained, using label-free Raman spectroscopy as a tool for molecular diagnostics and the identification of biomarkers for the diagnosis of pathologies. Organization of the biennial international congress BioMaH (BioMaterials and Novel technologies for Healthcare), of which the first edition was successfully held in October 2016 and the second in October 2018.
