Development of Solar Thermal Power Technologies in China

On Tuesday, October 15th, at 11:00, Prof. Gang Xiao, Deputy Director of the Institute of Thermal Energy Engineering at Zhejiang University, will present a seminar on the most innovative technologies and the current state of solar thermal technologies in China. The event will take place at the Conference Room of CNR Area of Montelibretti.

Solar Thermal Power (STP) technology has gained significant attention in China as an innovative solution for renewable energy transition. This presentation reviews the current status of STP in China, highlighting the key projects, technological advancements, and policy frameworks driving its growth. It explores China’s ambitious goals for STP integration into the national energy grid, as well as the challenges posed by intermittency, energy storage, and cost efficiency. Moreover, this report examines how China is leveraging STP technology to complement other renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics and wind, while addressing the nation's energy security and carbon neutrality goals.

Prof. Gang Xiao is Deputy Director of Institute for Thermal Power Engineering, Zhejiang University. He received his PhD in engineering thermophysics in 2006 and has been working as full Professor since 2014. He has published over 100 journal papers on biomass (pyrolysis, gasification and combustion), gas turbine, solar thermochemistry, solar thermal power, thermal energy storage etc. He has been granted of 50 Chinese, 6 US, 3 Japanese and one Australian patents, as well as 10 intellectual rights for software. He published 2 books and was the Chief Editor of the solar tower receiver standard.
