SENSOCARD: SENSOrs for rapid detection CARDiovascular emergencies

SENSOCARD aims to the optimization and  field demonstration  of an integrated prototype for the diagnosis of cardiovascular emergencies. The prototype is a multifunctional platform that:

  • integrates pulse oximeter, sphygmomanometer, ECG and Impedance Cardiography (ICG) signals with blood chemistry values (e.g.  troponin) detected from a drop of blood;
  • allows the rapid and non-invasive identification of fatal arrhythmias, heart attack  and respiratory failure induced by pulmonary edema.

Cardiovascular diseases are still the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in industrialized countries and, in particular, sudden death is in 40% of cases the first symptom of a serious coronary artery disease that had hitherto been silent. Therefore, the immediate diagnosis of a heart attack or the presence of potentially fatal arrhythmias is the most effective weapon in the fight against these diseases.
 SENSOCARD proposes the optimization and filed demonstration of an integrated prototype for the diagnosis of cardiovascular emergencies developed and tested in the laboratory as part of the HA-R2EC project funded by the POR FESR Life 2020.

Idea: The prototype, defined DIREC +, is a multifunctional platform that i) integrates signals deriving from pulse oximeter, sphygmomanometer, ECG and Impedance Cardiography (ICG) with the haematochemical values, detected by a drop of blood, and the level of oxidative stress, measured from a saliva sample and ii) allows the rapid, inexpensive and non-invasive identification of fatal arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction and respiratory failure induced by acute pulmonary edema.

CNR-ISM activitiy: Development of point-of-care diagnostic kits for the measurement of troponin and oxidative stress capable of providing results in a very short period of time and in the immediacy of the area or clinic where the patient is.
Goals :
- drastic reduction in the volume of blood sample to be analyzed: the goal is to analyze capillary blood samples (50-200 microL).
- optimization of the operational stability and conservation of the bioreceptor through state-of-the-art immobilization techniques (electrospray ionization).
