CELSTAM-ORTVET - Innovative Technologies in Regenerative Therapy: Stem Cells and Scaffolds in Veterinary Orthopedics

Regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field focused on the prospect of repairing, replacing and / or regenerating tissues and / or organs.

Regenerative medicine is an interdisciplinary field focused on the prospect of repairing, replacing and / or regenerating tissues and / or organs. Thanks to the combined use of stem cells, blood products (eg plasma rich in platelets and fibrin glue), bioactive molecules (scaffolds), the repair and reconstruction processes of damaged tissues and organs are supported. In the context of the dog, cat and horse clinic, the osteoarticular system is the one that most frequently undergoes injuries.
The purpose of this research is to produce innovative therapeutic protocols relating to the isolation, growth and inoculation of stem cells in dogs, cats and horses with orthopedic diseases.
A further objective will be to produce scaffolds and study in vitro their application in association with stem cells in order to improve subsequent implantation strategies and promoting the regeneration of lesions: complicated fractures, surgical resections (tumor or infectious, e.g. osteomyelitis), etc.
