Research Activity
The staff working at the FemtoLAB and LIBS laboratories carries out activities based on laser techniques allowing both time-resolved spectroscopic characterizations and the production of advanced materials in the form of thin films, nanostructured systems and nanoparticles or nanocomposites colloidal solutions. The expertise gained over the years on laser-matter interaction has allowed to consolidate the skills of the group which uses laser pulsed beams of 120 fs and 7 ns. These find application in Key Enabling Technologies - KETs, such as advanced materials, micro- and nano-electronics, nanotechnologies, photonics and advanced manufacturing systems, i.e., for instance:
- Artificial Photosynthesis
- Additive-Manufacturing of metals
- Organic photovoltaics
- Biomaterials for Tissue and Genetic Engineering
- Molecular electronics
- Laser technologies for nanosciences
- Nanoparticles for sensors

Equipments
The research activities taking place at the FemtoLAB and LIBS laboratory are based on different experimental setups that exploit the properties of laser-matter interaction processes occurring with laser pulses in the fs and ns time scale regime. The preparation of thin films, nanostructured materials and the 2D and 3D micro- and nano-fabrication of solid materials is carried out by using, in turn, a vacuum chamber for PLD and a µ-FAB workstation for micro- and nano-machining. The laboratory is also equipped with an experimental setup suitable for performing Laser Ablation in Liquid (LAL) preparations of colloidal solutions of nanomaterials. Furthermore, at the laboratory a fast Detector / Camera system providing both shadowgraphs of the laser induced cavitation bubble and laser induced plasma dynamics plasma as well as detections of the Laser Induced Breakdown Spektroscopy (LIBS) emitted lines providing microdestructive quali- and quantitative analyses of solid materials without the use of any sample preparation. Moreover, the laboratory can offer the study of fluorescence radiative decay processes in organic and inorganic semiconductors, thin films and nanostructured materials through the employment of a time resolved fluorescence system based on the Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting (TCSPC) technique.

Operating agreements
Since 2015: CNR-ISM and the Department of Science of the University of Basilicata have subscribed a Scientific Framework Agreement for carrying out, jointly, research activities concerning:
1) the development and application of methodologies based on laser techniques through the survey of the chemical-physical features of the processes induced;
2) the synthesis and characterization of -conjugates organic systems;
3) the development of materials for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.
